The tradition of consuming fireweed (Est. põdrakanep) is deeply rooted in the history of the Baltic Sea region. In the 19th century, 'Koporye Tea' was well-known to the inhabitants of the Governorate of Estonia
and the cities of the northern coast. Local apothecaries and herbalists valued it as much as foreign varieties, and at fairs in Tallinn and Tartu, fermented fireweed was considered a healthy and affordable alternative to expensive Chinese tea.
